"Find me cards equivalent to: Ice Cauldron"

Ice Cauldron is unique with its mana storage and casting mechanic, but here are some colorless artifact cards with similar themes (exile/play from exile, mana manipulation):
1. Prototype Portal – Exiles a card from your hand, copies it.
2. Isochron Scepter – Exiles an instant from your hand, copies/casts it later.
3. Panoptic Mirror – Exiles an instant/sorcery, copies/casts it later.
4. Mimic Vat – Exiles a creature, makes copies.
5. Aetherworks Marvel – Uses energy (counters) to cast exiled cards for free.

Reason: All are colorless artifacts with exile/play from exile or stored/cast mechanic, in the spirit of Ice Cauldron. None are exact replacements, but most offer similar functionalities.

  • Aetherworks Marvel's first ability triggers whenever any permanent you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, including Aetherworks Marvel itself and other permanents put into a graveyard at the same time as it.
  • If the card has {X} in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it without paying its mana cost.
  • If you cast a card "without paying its mana cost," you can't choose to cast it for any alternative costs, such as emerge costs. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, such as that of Incendiary Sabotage, you must pay those to cast the card.
  • The card cast with Aetherworks Marvel's second ability is cast from your library.
  • Tokens that are sacrificed or destroyed are put into their owner's graveyard before ceasing to exist. If you controlled the token, Aetherworks Marvel's first ability will trigger.
  • Energy counters are a kind of counter that a player may have. They're not associated with any specific permanents.
  • Energy counters aren't mana. They don't go away as steps, phases, and turns end, and effects that add mana "of any type" can't give you energy counters.
  • If a spell or ability with one or more targets states that you "may pay" some amount of {E}, and each permanent that it targets has become an illegal target, the spell or ability won't resolve. You can't pay any {E} even if you want to.
  • If an effect says you get one or more {E}, you get that many energy counters. To pay one or more {E}, you lose that many energy counters. You can't pay more energy counters than you have. Any effects that interact with counters a player gets, has, or loses can interact with energy counters.
  • Keep track of how many energy counters each player has. Potential ways to track this include writing theme down on paper or using dice, but any method that is clear and mutually agreeable is fine. (At higher levels of tournament play, dice may not be allowed for tracking counters that players have.)
  • Some spells and abilities that give you {E} may require targets. If each target chosen is an illegal target as that spell or ability tries to resolve, it won't resolve. You won't get any {E}.
  • Some triggered abilities state that you "may pay" a certain amount of {E}. You can't pay that amount multiple times to multiply the effect. You simply choose whether or not to pay that amount of {E} as the ability resolves.
  • Some triggered abilities that state that you "may pay" a certain amount of {E} describe an effect that happens "If you do." In that case, no player may take actions to try to stop the ability's effect after you make your choice. If the payment is followed by the phrase "When you do," then you'll choose any targets for that reflexive triggered ability and put it on the stack before players can take actions.
  • {E} is the energy symbol. It represents one energy counter.

  • Cards which are not actually in your hand can't be exiled by the Ice Cauldron.
  • If multiple cards are exiled by the Cauldron, any one of them can be cast.
  • If multiple cards are exiled by the Cauldron, the mana can only be used for the card that was exiled by the Cauldron when the most recent charge counter was put there.
  • If the Cauldron leaves the battlefield, you can still cast any cards it exiled as though they were in your hand. You just no longer have access to the mana you charged the Cauldron with.
  • If the ability to exile a card with the Cauldron is countered, you do not lose the card since it is exiled during resolution.
  • It is possible to have more than one card exiled by the Cauldron. You can tap the Cauldron to remove the charge counter and whatever mana is on it but leave the card there. Later, you can tap it and put in mana and a charge counter to add another card.
  • Produces mana of the last type used to put a counter on itself, not via any other charge counters.
  • Tapping the Cauldron for the mana is a mana ability.
  • The Cauldron counts only mana spent on it. It doesn't see the value of X, so isn't affected by cost reductions. Thus, if you spent {C}{C}{R}{R} on X, you get {C}{C}{R}{R} later even if X was 6.
  • The mana can be used to pay for additional costs to cast the spell.
  • The mana put in the Cauldron can only be used to cast the given spell, but you can add additional mana to a spell. This means you can pay part of the cost on one turn and the rest of it on the next turn.
  • X can be zero. This places a zero mana counter on the Cauldron.
  • You can only cast the spell when you could legally cast it normally. So no casting a sorcery on your opponent's turn.
  • You do not have to use any mana from the Cauldron when casting the spell if you don't want to. You don't even have to tap the Cauldron and draw the mana, you can just cast the spell using mana from somewhere else.

  • If Isochron Scepter leaves the battlefield while the activated ability is on the stack, the ability can still make a copy. On the other hand, if the imprinted card leaves the exile zone while the activated ability is on the stack, the copy can't be made.

  • If you cast a spell "without paying its mana cost," you can't choose to cast it for any alternative costs. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, those must be paid to cast the spell.
  • If you don't want to cast the copy, you can choose not to; the copy ceases to exist the next time state-based actions are checked.
  • You cast the copy while the ability is resolving and still on the stack. You can't wait to cast it later in the turn.

  • Any "enters" abilities of the exiled card will trigger when the token is put onto the battlefield. Any "as [this permanent] enters" or "[this permanent] enters with" abilities of the exiled card will also work.
  • Exiling the card as the first ability resolves is optional. If you choose not to exile it, or you can't exile it because the card has somehow left the graveyard before the ability resolves, the ability simply doesn't do anything as it resolves. Any card currently exiled by Mimic Vat remains exiled.
  • If Mimic Vat's second ability is activated during a turn's end step, the token will be exiled at the beginning of the following turn's end step.
  • If multiple nontoken creatures are put into their owners' graveyards from the battlefield at the same time, the imprint ability will trigger that many times. You put the triggered abilities on the stack in any order, so you'll determine in which order they resolve. However, since exiling those cards is optional, and choosing to exile a card this way causes the previously exiled cards to return to their owners' graveyards, the order generally doesn't matter: You'll wind up with at most one of those cards exiled, and the rest will be in the appropriate graveyards.
  • If the exiled card has {X} in its mana cost (such as Protean Hydra), X is considered to be 0.
  • If the token is a copy of a noncreature card, it will still have haste, though that won't matter unless that token somehow becomes a creature.
  • If the token isn't exiled when the delayed triggered ability resolves (due to Stifle, perhaps), it remains on the battlefield indefinitely. It continues to have haste.
  • The imprint ability will trigger whenever a nontoken creature is put into any graveyard from the battlefield, not just your graveyard.
  • The token created by the second ability will be a copy of whatever card is exiled with Mimic Vat at the time the ability resolves. This might not be the same card that was exiled with Mimic Vat at the time the ability was activated. It also might not be a creature card.
  • The token is exiled at the beginning of the next end step regardless of who controls it at that time, whether the exiled card is still exiled at that time, or whether Mimic Vat is still on the battlefield at that time.
  • You may activate the second ability even if no card has been exiled with Mimic Vat. If no card has been exiled with Mimic Vat by the time the ability resolves, no token will be created.
  • You may exile a noncreature card with Mimic Vat's first ability. For example, if a nontoken artifact that's become a creature is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, Mimic Vat's first ability triggers and you may exile that card.
  • If a melded permanent dies and triggers Mimic Vat's triggered ability, both of its component cards are exiled. As Mimic Vat's second ability resolves, its controller chooses one of those cards to make a token copy of.
  • If the creature that dies is an instant or sorcery card that's been manifested, Mimic Vat may have a nonpermanent card exiled. You can't create a token that's a copy of a nonpermanent card. No token is created in this case.

  • As Panoptic Mirror's triggered ability resolves, it allows you to create a copy of one of the instant or sorcery cards imprinted on Panoptic Mirror in the Exile zone (that's where the imprinted card is) and then cast it without paying its mana cost.
  • Exiling a card when the activated ability resolves is optional. If you choose to exile a card, you can exile only a card with mana value equal to X.
  • The triggered ability triggers only once each upkeep, not once per imprinted card. If no cards are imprinted on Panoptic Mirror when the triggered ability resolves, it does nothing.
  • You don't pay the spell's mana cost. If the spell has X in its mana cost, X is 0. You do pay any additional costs for that spell. You can't use any alternative costs.
  • You may imprint a card on Panoptic Mirror in response to the upkeep-triggered ability. If you do, that card is available to copy when the triggered ability resolves.
  • The creation of the copy and then the casting of the copy are both optional.
  • To imprint a split card, you pay X equal to card's mana value, determined by the combined mana cost of its two halves. If the copied card is a split card, you choose which one side of it to cast, but you can't cast both sides.

  • If Prototype Portal has left the battlefield by the time its second ability resolves, you'll still put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of the exiled card. On the other hand, if Prototype Portal is still on the battlefield at this time but there is no exiled card (because, perhaps, Riftsweeper's ability caused the exiled card to be put into its owner's library), no token is created.
  • If the exiled card has {X} in its mana cost (such as Chalice of the Void), that X is considered to be 0. The {X} in Prototype Portal's activation cost takes this into account, though it may be greater than 0 if the exiled card has other mana symbols in its mana cost (such as Riptide Replicator).
  • You don't choose the value of {X}. Rather, the value of X is defined by the activated ability.
  • You may not activate the second ability if no card has been exiled with Prototype Portal. In that case, the value of {X} is undefined and can't be paid.
