2. Lightning Bolt – R, Instant, deals 3 damage to any target.

    Rules

  • Fireball's damage is divided as Fireball resolves, not as it's cast, because there are no choices involved. The division involves only targets that are still legal as Fireball resolves.
  • For example, if X is 5 and you choose three target creatures, Fireball has a total cost of {7}{R} (even though its mana cost is just {5}{R} and its mana value is 6). If those creatures are all still legal targets as Fireball resolves, it deals 1 damage to each of them.
  • You can target more than X creatures. However, if the number of legal targets at the time Fireball resolves is greater than X, none of them will be dealt any damage.
  • You may cast Fireball with zero targets, regardless of the value chosen for X. If you do so, it will not be a targeted spell, and no damage will actually be dealt when it resolves.

This spell costs more to cast for each target beyond the first. Fireball deals X damage divided evenly, rounded down, among any number of targets.

    Scry

    Rules

  • Scry appears on some spells and abilities with one or more targets. If all of the spell or ability's targets are illegal when it tries to resolve, it won't resolve and none of its effects will happen. You won't scry.
  • When you scry, you may put all the cards you look at back on top of your library, you may put all of those cards on the bottom of your library, or you may put some of those cards on top and the rest of them on the bottom.
  • You choose how to order cards returned to your library after scrying no matter where you put them.
  • You perform the actions stated on a card in sequence. For some spells and abilities, that means you'll scry last. For others, that means you'll scry and then perform other actions.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Rules

  • If either target is illegal by the time Searing Blaze resolves, it still deals damage to the other target.
  • You must choose two targets as you cast Searing Blaze: a player and a creature that player controls. If you can't (because there are no creatures on the battlefield, perhaps), then you can't cast the spell.
  • Having more than one land enter the battlefield under your control this turn provides no additional benefit.
  • Once the spell resolves, having a land enter under your control provides no further benefit.
  • The effect of this spell's landfall ability replaces its normal effect. If you had a land enter under your control this turn, only the landfall-based effect happens.
  • The landfall ability checks for an action that has happened in the past. It doesn't matter if a land that entered the battlefield under your control previously in the turn is still on the battlefield, is still under your control, or is still a land.
  • Whether you had a land enter the battlefield under your control this turn is checked as this spell resolves, not as you cast it.

    Tiered

    Rules

  • If a mode requires a target, you can select that mode only if there's a legal target available. Ignore the targeting requirements for modes you don't choose.
  • If a spell with tiered is copied, the effect that creates the copy may allow you to choose new targets. You cannot choose a new mode.
  • If an effect allows you to cast a spell with tiered "without paying its mana cost," you must still choose exactly one mode and pay the associated additional cost.
  • The mana value of a spell with tiered is determined only by its mana cost (in the upper right corner of the card). It doesn't matter which mode you choose or which additional costs you pay, including any additional costs imposed by other effects.
  • You choose the mode as you cast the spell with tiered. Once the mode is chosen, it can't be changed.
  • You must choose exactly one of the listed modes and pay its associated additional cost in order to cast a spell with tiered.
