"Find me cards equivalent to: Torch the Witness"

Cards equivalent to Torch the Witness (red, sorcery, deals X damage to creatures):

  • Soul Sear — Deals 5 damage to creature or planeswalker, but no variable X or investigate ability.
  • Roast — Deals 5 damage to target creature.
  • Fireball — Classic X damage spell, but can target creatures or players, no investigate.
  • Chandra's Ignition — X is not variable but based on a creature’s power; it deals that much damage to each other creature and planeswalker.
  • Wrecking Flame — Deals 5 damage, not variable, but has excess damage clause.

Closest direct equivalent: Fireball — also red, also an X damage sorcery, but lacks investigate and the specific excess damage clause. None are an exact match for both the doubled X effect and the clue creation.

  • If the creature becomes an illegal target by the time Chandra's Ignition tries to resolve (perhaps because another player controls it or it's left the battlefield), Chandra's Ignition won't resolve and none of its effects will happen. No damage will be dealt.
  • The creature is the source of the damage, not Chandra's Ignition. For example, Chandra's Ignition can have a white creature deal damage to a creature with protection from red.
  • Use the power of the target creature as Chandra's Ignition resolves to determine how much damage it deals to each other creature and each opponent.

    Rules

  • Fireball's damage is divided as Fireball resolves, not as it's cast, because there are no choices involved. The division involves only targets that are still legal as Fireball resolves.
  • For example, if X is 5 and you choose three target creatures, Fireball has a total cost of {7}{R} (even though its mana cost is just {5}{R} and its mana value is 6). If those creatures are all still legal targets as Fireball resolves, it deals 1 damage to each of them.
  • You can target more than X creatures. However, if the number of legal targets at the time Fireball resolves is greater than X, none of them will be dealt any damage.
  • You may cast Fireball with zero targets, regardless of the value chosen for X. If you do so, it will not be a targeted spell, and no damage will actually be dealt when it resolves.

This spell costs more to cast for each target beyond the first. Fireball deals X damage divided evenly, rounded down, among any number of targets.

    Investigate

    Rules

  • A creature has been dealt excess damage if one or more sources dealt more damage to it than the minimum amount of damage required to be lethal damage. In most cases, this means damage greater than its toughness, but consider the damage already dealt to it this turn.
  • Clue is an artifact type. Even though it appears on some cards with other permanent types, it's never a creature type, a land type, or anything but an artifact type.
  • Even 1 damage dealt to a creature from a source with deathtouch is considered lethal damage. If Torch the Witness has deathtouch (perhaps due to the effect of Judith, Carnage Connoisseur), any amount greater than 1 damage will cause excess damage to be dealt, even if the total amount of damage dealt to that creature this turn isn't greater than the creature's toughness.
  • If an effect refers to a Clue, it means any Clue artifact, not just a Clue artifact token. For example, you can sacrifice Wrench to pay for Alquist Proft, Master Sleuth's activated ability.
  • Some abilities trigger "whenever you sacrifice a Clue". Those abilities trigger whenever you sacrifice a Clue for any reason, not just to activate a Clue's activated ability.
  • Some spells and abilities that investigate may require targets. If each target chosen is an illegal target as that spell or ability tries to resolve, it won't resolve. You won't create any Clue tokens.
  • You can't sacrifice a Clue to pay multiple costs. For example, you can't sacrifice a Clue token to activate its own ability and also to activate Alquist Proft, Master Sleuth's ability.
