    Rules

  • Each creature with lifelink dealing combat damage causes a separate life-gaining event. For example, if two creatures you control with lifelink deal combat damage at the same time, Ajani's Pridemate's ability will trigger twice. However, if a single creature you control with lifelink deals combat damage to multiple creatures, players, and/or planeswalkers at the same time (perhaps because it has trample or was blocked by more than one creature), the ability will trigger only once.
  • If Ajani's Pridemate is dealt lethal damage at the same time that you gain life, it won't receive a counter from its ability in time to save it.
  • If a planeswalker you control is also a creature (most likely because it's Gideon), it will be counted twice as Ajani's first ability resolves.
  • In a Two-Headed Giant game, Ajani's last ability exiles permanents as long as your team's life total is greater than your team's starting life total by 15 or more life.
  • In a Two-Headed Giant game, life gained by your teammate won't cause Ajani's Pridemate's ability to trigger, even though it will cause your team's life total to increase.
  • The ability of Ajani's Pridemate triggers just once for each life-gaining event, whether it's 1 life from Impassioned Orator or 4 life from Dawning Angel.   • A creature with a shield counter on it may still be destroyed by state-based actions if it has damage marked on it equal to its toughness or has been dealt unpreventable damage by a source with deathtouch.
  • For Elspeth's first ability, its controller chooses flying, first strike, lifelink, or vigilance, then that counter and the +1/+1 counter are placed on the target creature at the same time.
  • If a permanent that would be dealt damage has more than one shield counter on it, that damage is prevented and only one shield counter is removed.

  • Gideon's first ability causes him to become a creature with the creature types Human, Soldier, and Ally. He remains a planeswalker with the planeswalker type Gideon. (He also retains any other card types or subtypes he may have had.) Each subtype is correlated to the proper card type: planeswalker is only a type (not a creature type), and Human, Soldier, and Ally are just creature types (not planeswalker types).
  • Gideon's first ability doesn't count as a creature entering the battlefield. Gideon was already on the battlefield; he only changed his types. Specifically, your rally abilities won't trigger. (Of course, Gideon's second ability will cause rally abilities to trigger.)
  • If Gideon becomes a creature the same turn he enters the battlefield, you can't attack with him or use any of his {T} abilities (if he gains any).
  • If damage that can't be prevented is dealt to Gideon after his first ability has resolved, that damage will have all applicable results: specifically, the damage is marked on Gideon (since he's a creature) and that damage causes that many loyalty counters to be removed from him (since he's a planeswalker).   • If you have less than 1 life and somehow haven't lost the game, damage dealt to you reduces your life total further below 0 (as normal).
  • In a Two-Headed Giant game, damage dealt to you and/or your teammate that would reduce your team's life total to less than 1 reduces it to 1 instead, as long as you control a creature. It doesn't matter whether your teammate controls a creature, even if they're the player being dealt damage
  • In the Commander variant, combat damage you're dealt by a commander is still tracked, even if it doesn't change your life total.
  • Serra's emblem doesn't prevent damage. It only changes the result of damage dealt to you. For example, a creature with lifelink that deals damage to you will still cause its controller to gain life, even if that damage would reduce your life total to less than 1.
  • Serra's emblem doesn't stop loss of life from effects that say that you lose life.
