"Find me cards equivalent to: Shape Anew"

Equivalent or similar cards to Shape Anew (blue, sorcery, artifact cheat effect):

  • Polymorph – Same effect but works on creatures instead of artifacts.
  • Transmute Artifact – Blue, but an old, expensive card, tutors for an artifact but not random.
  • Whir of Invention – Not a sorcery, but blue and fetches artifacts onto the battlefield.
  • Tinker – Blue, sorcery, sacrifices artifact to find another artifact, but you choose the artifact.

Closest true equivalents for Shape Anew are Polymorph and Tinker; both mimic the swap/randomization effect. Polymorph is the best direct comparison, but for creatures instead.

  • If there are no creatures in the player’s library, then the target creature is still destroyed, you see all the cards in that player’s library, and then they shuffle and continue play.
  • A “creature card” is any card with the type creature, even if it has other types such as artifact, enchantment, or land. Older cards of type summon are also creature cards.
  • If the targeted creature is an illegal target by the time Polymorph would resolve, the entire spell doesn’t resolve. Nothing else happens.
  • If there are no creature cards in the player’s library, all the cards in that library are revealed, then the library is shuffled. (The targeted creature remains destroyed.)
  • If the targeted creature has indestructible, it’s still a legal target — it just isn’t destroyed. The rest of Polymorph’s effect happens as normal.

  • If the first card the player reveals is an artifact card, they will still have to shuffle their library even though no other cards were revealed this way.
  • If the targeted artifact is an illegal target by the time Shape Anew resolves, the spell doesn’t resolve. Nothing else happens.
  • If the targeted artifact’s controller can’t sacrifice it (due to Tajuru Preserver, perhaps), the other effects of the spell will still happen.
  • If there are no artifact cards in the player’s library, all the cards in that library are revealed, then the library is shuffled. (The targeted artifact remains sacrificed.)

  • Additional mana spent to cover the differences in mana costs is not part of the mana cost of this spell. It is spent during spell resolution.
  • Because the "search" requires you to find a card with certain characteristics, you don't have to find the card if you don't want to.
  • If the chosen artifact costs less than or the same as the sacrificed artifact, you simply put it onto the battlefield without paying any additional costs.
  • The one from the library enters when the spell is resolved, and this does not count as the casting of an artifact.
  • You can't sacrifice more than one artifact to this spell.
  • The sacrifice of an artifact is an effect of the spell, not a cost, which means it happens as the spell resolves. If Transmute Artifact is countered, you do not have to sacrifice an artifact.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Improvise

    Rules

  • Because improvise isn't an alternative cost, it can be used in conjunction with alternative costs.
  • Equipment attached to a creature doesn't become tapped when that creature becomes tapped, and tapping that Equipment doesn't cause the creature to become tapped.
  • If an artifact you control has a mana ability with {T} in the cost, activating that ability while casting a spell with improvise will result in the artifact being tapped when you pay the spell's costs. You won't be able to tap it again for improvise. Similarly, if you sacrifice an artifact to activate a mana ability while casting a spell with improvise, that artifact won't be on the battlefield when you pay the spell's costs, so you won't be able to tap it for improvise.
  • Improvise can't be used to pay for anything other than the cost of casting the spell. For example, it can't be used during the resolution of an ability that says "Counter target spell unless its controller pays {3}."
  • Improvise can't pay for {W}, {U}, {B}, {R}, {G}, or {C} mana symbols in a spell's total cost.
  • Improvise doesn't change a spell's mana cost or mana value.
  • Tapping an artifact won't cause its abilities to stop applying unless those abilities say so.
  • When calculating a spell's total cost, include any alternative costs, additional costs, or anything else that increases or reduces the cost to cast the spell. Improvise applies after the total cost is calculated.
  • When using improvise to cast a spell with {X} in its mana cost, first choose the value for X. That choice, plus any cost increases or decreases, will determine the spell's total cost. Then you can tap artifacts you control to help pay that cost. For example, if you cast Whir of Invention (a spell with improvise and mana cost {X}{U}{U}{U}) and choose X to be 3, the total cost is {3}{U}{U}{U}. If you tap two artifacts, you'll have to pay {1}{U}{U}{U}.
