"Find me cards equivalent to: Tainted Sigil"

Equivalent cards (same colors, similar effect) include:

  • Tainted Sigil (Original)
  • Soul Snuffers (Not equivalent—wrong effect, skip)
  • Alhammarret's Archive (Artifact, colorless, enhances lifegain, not directly equivalent but synergistic)
  • Tablet of the Guilds (Life gain on spell cast, not from life lost.)
  • Whip of Erebos (Provides lifelink to your creatures, but not an artifact and not exactly equivalent.)

Closest equivalents in BW artifacts with life gain from life lost are limited. Tainted Sigil is unique in its effect, though Alhammarret's Archive can synergize, and Tablet of the Guilds also gains life. No exact equivalent exists for BW artifact with that specific effect; Tainted Sigil stands alone.

  • Because Alhammarret’s Archive is legendary, it’s unlikely that one player will control two. However, if that happens, life gained by that player will be multiplied by four. Three Archives will multiply that life gain by eight, and so on.
  • If an effect would set your life total to a specific number that’s higher than your current life total, that effect would cause you to gain life equal to the difference. Alhammarret’s Archive will then double the amount of life that effect would cause you to gain. For example, if you have 3 life and an effect says that your life total “becomes 10,” your life total will actually become 17.
  • If two or more replacement effects would apply to a card-drawing event, the player drawing the card chooses the order in which to apply them.
  • In a Two-Headed Giant game, only the controller of Alhammarret’s Archive is affected by it. If that player’s teammate gains life, Alhammarret’s Archive will have no effect, even when that life gain is applied to the team’s shared life total.
  • Similarly, the effects of the last abilities of multiple Archives are cumulative. If you control two, you’ll draw four times the number of cards, and so on.

  • If you lose enough life to lower your life total to 0 or less, you’ll lose the game as a state-based actions before you activate Tainted Sigil’s ability.
  • Tainted Sigil’s ability checks only whether life was lost. It doesn’t care whether life was also gained. For example, say one player lost 4 life during the turn and no one else lost any, but that same player also gained 6 life that turn. That player has a higher life total than they started the turn with — but Tainted Sigil’s ability counts only the life loss, so you’ll gain 4 life.
  • Tainted Sigil’s ability counts the life lost by all players, including you.
  • When Tainted Sigil’s ability resolves, it checks how much life each player lost over the course of the turn, then it totals that number and you gain that much life in one shot. It doesn’t matter how a player lost life or what caused it. It also doesn’t matter if Tainted Sigil wasn’t on the battlefield when some or all of the life was lost.

  • At the beginning of the next end step, the creature returned to the battlefield with Whip of Erebos is exiled. This is a delayed triggered ability. If the ability is countered, the creature will stay on the battlefield and the delayed trigger won't trigger again. However, the replacement effect will still exile the creature when it eventually leaves the battlefield.
  • If a creature returned to the battlefield with Whip of Erebos would leave the battlefield for any reason, it's exiled instead. However, if that creature is already being exiled, then the replacement effect won't apply. If the spell or ability that exiles it later returns it to the battlefield (as Chained to the Rocks might, for example), the creature card will return to the battlefield as a new object with no relation to its previous existence. The effects from Whip of Erebos will no longer apply to it.
  • The exiled creature is never put into the graveyard. Any abilities the creature has that trigger when it dies won't trigger.
  • Whip of Erebos grants haste to the creature that's returned to the battlefield. However, neither of the "exile" abilities is granted to that creature. If that creature loses all its abilities, it will still be exiled at the beginning of the end step, and if it would leave the battlefield, it is still exiled instead.
