  • At the time of this document's publication, it is exceedingly unlikely you will reveal a battle this way. This likelihood will change over time.
  • If a revealed card has more than one card type, you may choose to put it into your hand for any of its types. For example, an artifact creature card could be put into your hand as the artifact card you choose or as the creature card you choose. If you choose it as the artifact card, you could also put into your hand a creature card, and vice versa.

    Rules

  • After you draw a card as Nicol Bolas's first loyalty ability resolves, the next opponent in turn order (or, if it's somehow an opponent's turn, that opponent) chooses a permanent they control or chooses a card in hand without revealing that card. Then each other opponent in turn order does the same, knowing the choices made before them. Finally, all of the chosen permanents and cards are exiled simultaneously.
  • If a loyalty ability of a planeswalker references the card it's printed on by name, treat Nicol Bolas's instance of that ability as though it referenced Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God by name instead. For instance, if Ral Zarek is on the battlefield, Nicol Bolas deals the damage if you activate the second ability he gained from Ral.
  • If an ability of a planeswalker exiles cards and another loyalty ability of that planeswalker references the exiled cards, those abilities are linked. If Nicol Bolas gains both abilities from the same planeswalker, the instances he has are similarly linked. Cards exiled by any other abilities Nicol Bolas has (such as his own first loyalty ability) won't be seen by those linked abilities.
  • If any abilities trigger as you draw a card while resolving Nicol Bolas's first loyalty ability, those abilities don't resolve until after your opponents have exiled a card or permanent.
  • In a Two-Headed Giant game, if one player on a team loses the game, the entire team loses the game, even if the other player controls a legendary creature or planeswalker.
  • Nicol Bolas doesn't gain any static or triggered abilities of other planeswalkers or any activated abilities they may have that aren't loyalty abilities.
  • Nicol Bolas doesn't remove loyalty abilities from the other planeswalkers.
  • While Nicol Bolas may end up with an astonishing number of loyalty abilities, you can still activate only one loyalty ability of Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God during each of your turns.

    Cascade

    Rules

  • If a spell has multiple instances of cascade (for example, if you cast a second The First Sliver), each instance of cascade triggers and resolves separately. The spell you cast due to the first cascade ability will go on the stack on top of the second cascade ability. That spell will resolve before you exile cards for the second cascade ability.
  • The First Sliver's last ability only applies while it's on the battlefield. If The First Sliver's own cascade ability lets you cast another Sliver card, that Sliver won't have cascade.
  • A spell's mana value is determined only by its mana cost. Ignore any alternative costs, additional costs, cost increases, or cost reductions.
  • Cascade triggers when you cast the spell, meaning that it resolves before that spell. If you end up casting the exiled card, it will go on the stack above the spell with cascade.
  • Due to a 2021 rules change to cascade, not only do you stop exiling cards if you exile a nonland card with lesser mana value than the spell with cascade, but the resulting spell you cast must also have lesser mana value. Previously, in cases where a card's mana value differed from the resulting spell, such as with some modal double-faced cards or cards with an Adventure, you could cast a spell with a higher mana value than the exiled card.
  • If a spell with cascade is countered, the cascade ability will still resolve normally.
  • If the card has {X} in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it without paying its mana cost.
  • If you cast a card "without paying its mana cost," you can't choose to cast it for any alternative costs. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, you must pay those to cast the card.
  • The mana value of a split card is determined by the combined mana cost of its two halves. If cascade allows you to cast a split card, you may cast either half but not both halves.
  • When the cascade ability resolves, you must exile cards. The only optional part of the ability is whether or not you cast the last card exiled.
  • You exile the cards face up. All players will be able to see them.

  • If an ability comes up that requires a target and there are legal targets available, you must use that ability even if you may not want to. However, the effects are all good for you or bad for your opponent. In some cases, you may not be able to take advantage. For example, if it ends up that creatures you control get +1/+1 until end of turn but you don't control any creatures, you're out of luck. But nothing bad will happen.
  • Players can respond to the activation of any of Urza's abilities, but not after players know what effect is going to happen.
  • Urza's abilities work a little differently with respect to targeting. Unlike other abilities, you may have to choose the targets for an ability as part of that ability resolving. If the ability that comes up requires a target and there are no legal targets available, click again until that's not true.
  • Urza, Academy Headmaster is just like any other planeswalker, except you're never quite sure what his abilities are going to do. Urza is very unpredictable. To find out what happens, head to AskUrza.com. There you will find three buttons: +1, -1, and -6. Click the button for the loyalty ability that's resolving, and follow whatever instructions appear.
