    Escalate

    Rules

  • Additional costs don’t affect a spell’s mana value.
  • Effects that reduce the cost of spells reduce the total cost, including any escalate costs added.
  • If an effect allows you to cast a spell that has escalate without paying its mana cost, you pay escalate costs for that spell if you choose more than one mode.
  • If one target of an escalate spell becomes illegal, the other targets will still be affected. If all of the targets become illegal, the spell won’t resolve.
  • If two of the chosen modes of an escalate spell target a creature, you may choose the same creature for each mode’s target, or choose different creatures. The same is true if the chosen modes target a player (or opponent).
  • The targeted opponent chooses which of their attacking creatures to sacrifice, not you.
  • Untapping an attacking creature doesn’t cause it to be removed from combat.
  • You can’t choose any one mode multiple times.
  • You choose all of your modes at once. You can’t wait to perform one mode’s actions and then decide to choose more modes.

    Rules

  • Celestial Flare targets only a player, not any creature. A creature with hexproof or protection from white can be sacrificed this way.
  • Creatures continue to be attacking or blocking creatures through the end of combat step. It is possible to cast Celestial Flare within combat but after combat damage is dealt (specifically, during the combat damage step or the end of combat step). Only attacking and blocking creatures that survived combat damage can be sacrificed at this time.
  • If the player sacrifices a blocking creature, any attacking creature it was blocking remains blocked. Unless that attacking creature has trample or is being blocked by another creature, it won’t assign or deal combat damage.

    Rules

  • Crackling Doom doesn't target any player or creature. For example, a creature with protection from black could be sacrificed.
  • If a player controls two or more creatures tied for the greatest power among creatures they control, that player chooses one of them to sacrifice.
  • In a multiplayer game, each opponent, starting with the active player and proceeding in turn order, chooses which creature they will sacrifice and then all creatures are sacrificed at the same time. Each successive player will know what the players before them chose to sacrifice.
  • The sacrifice is not dependent on the damage being dealt. It doesn't matter if that damage is prevented or redirected.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Storm

    Rules

  • An “attacking creature” is one that has been declared as an attacker or put onto the battlefield attacking during a turn’s combat. Unless that creature leaves combat, it continues to be an attacking creature through the end of combat step, even if the player it was attacking has left the game or the planeswalker it was attacking has left combat.
  • If you cast Wing Shards after combat damage has been dealt, only creatures that survived combat can be sacrificed.
  • Storm counts spells cast before the spell with storm was cast. Spells cast after the spell with storm was cast but before the storm ability resolves aren’t counted.
  • The copies storm creates are created on the stack, so they’re not cast. Abilities that trigger when a player casts a spell (such as storm) won’t trigger.
  • The storm ability and the copies it creates all resolve before the spell with storm. They resolve even if the spell with storm is countered.
  • Wing Shards doesn’t target the creature to be sacrificed. The target player chooses the creature as it resolves.
