"Find me cards equivalent to: Baral's Expertise"

Cards equivalent to Baral's Expertise (blue, sorcery, bounce multiple permanents, cast free spell):
1. Flood of Tears – Returns all nonland permanents to owners' hands, then you may put a permanent from your hand onto the battlefield. (Stronger, but hits more types)
2. River's Rebuke – Returns all nonland permanents target player controls to their hand, no free cast. (No free cast, but mass bounce)
3. Aethersquall Ancient – Its ability returns all other creatures to their owners' hands, no free cast. (Repeatable, but only creatures, and not a sorcery)
4. Displacement Wave – Returns all nonland permanents with CMC X or less to hand. (No free cast, flexible CMC)

Reason: There are few cards that both bounce multiple permanents and cast a spell for free. The above are closest in effect and color as Baral's Expertise.

  • Energy counters are a kind of counter that a player may have. They're not associated with any specific permanents.
  • Energy counters aren't mana. They don't go away as steps, phases, and turns end, and effects that add mana "of any type" can't give you energy counters.
  • If a spell or ability with one or more targets states that you "may pay" some amount of {E}, and each permanent that it targets has become an illegal target, the spell or ability won't resolve. You can't pay any {E} even if you want to.
  • If an effect says you get one or more {E}, you get that many energy counters. To pay one or more {E}, you lose that many energy counters. You can't pay more energy counters than you have. Any effects that interact with counters a player gets, has, or loses can interact with energy counters.
  • Keep track of how many energy counters each player has. Potential ways to track this include writing theme down on paper or using dice, but any method that is clear and mutually agreeable is fine. (At higher levels of tournament play, dice may not be allowed for tracking counters that players have.)
  • Some spells and abilities that give you {E} may require targets. If each target chosen is an illegal target as that spell or ability tries to resolve, it won't resolve. You won't get any {E}.
  • Some triggered abilities state that you "may pay" a certain amount of {E}. You can't pay that amount multiple times to multiply the effect. You simply choose whether or not to pay that amount of {E} as the ability resolves.
  • Some triggered abilities that state that you "may pay" a certain amount of {E} describe an effect that happens "If you do." In that case, no player may take actions to try to stop the ability's effect after you make your choice. If the payment is followed by the phrase "When you do," then you'll choose any targets for that reflexive triggered ability and put it on the stack before players can take actions.
  • {E} is the energy symbol. It represents one energy counter.

  • A card's mana value is determined solely by the mana symbols printed in its upper right corner. The mana value is the total amount of mana in that cost, regardless of color. For example, a card with mana cost {1}{U}{U} has mana value 3. Ignore any alternative costs, additional costs, cost increases, or cost reductions that could apply to it. A card with no mana cost has a mana value of 0.
  • Any triggered abilities that trigger while performing the Expertise spell's first effect won't be put onto the stack until after you're done casting your free spell. They're put onto the stack at the same time as any abilities that triggered while casting that spell regardless of the order in which those abilities triggered.
  • Effects that allow you to "cast" a card don't allow you to play a land card.
  • If the Expertise spell you cast has any targets, and those targets become illegal before the spell resolves, the spell doesn't resolve and none of its effects happen. You won't get to cast a free spell.
  • If the card has {X} in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it without paying its mana cost.
  • If you cast a card "without paying its mana cost," you can't choose to cast it for any alternative costs, such as emerge costs. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, such as that of Cathartic Reunion, you must pay those to cast the card.
  • The card that you cast may be an artifact or creature that was returned to your hand by this spell.
  • While you're casting your free spell, the Expertise spell is still on the stack. It will be put into its owner's graveyard after the free spell is cast. The free spell can't target the Expertise card in your graveyard. It can target the Expertise spell on the stack, but the Expertise spell will become an illegal target before the free spell resolves.
  • The mana value of a split card is determined by the combined mana cost of its two halves. If an expertise spell allows you to cast a split card, you may cast either half or, if that split card has fuse, both halves.

  • Any abilities that trigger as the nonland permanents are returned are put onto the stack at the same time as any abilities that trigger as the permanent card is put onto the battlefield (if applicable).
  • If a permanent would be returned to your hand but ends up in another zone (most likely because an effect exiled it instead or because it's a player's commander in the Commander variant) Flood of Tears counts it when determining whether four or more of your nontoken permanents were returned.
  • If you return four or more nontoken permanents, the permanent card you put onto the battlefield may be one of the cards returned to your hand this way.
