"Find me cards equivalent to: Blood Cultist"

Equivalent cards to Blood Cultist (black/red creatures with a similar tap-and-damage ability and growing effect) are very rare. Here are options that are close in color and function:

  • Blood Cultist
  • Olivia, Mobilized for War (BR, discards to pump/gives menace, less direct damage but a similar 'growing' effect)
  • Glint-Sleeve Siphoner (B with slight growth, energy mechanic, not direct damage)
  • Rakdos Firewheeler (BR, enters battlefield-damage, no incremental growth on kill)
  • Rakdos, Lord of Riots (BR, deals damage, large upside on creature deaths, not via tap)

No card matches exactly, but Blood Cultist itself is the best at its unique tap-and-grow function in black/red. Closest for playstyle is Olivia, Mobilized for War, though it isn't an exact match.

Reason: This is a very unique ability set for black/red creatures. Most options will deviate in either not tapping to deal damage, or not directly growing from kills.

  • Each time a creature is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, check whether Blood Cultist had dealt any damage to it at any time during that turn. (This includes combat damage.) If so, Blood Cultist's second ability will trigger. It doesn't matter who controlled the creature or whose graveyard it was put into.
  • If Blood Cultist and a creature it dealt damage to are both put into a graveyard at the same time, Blood Cultist's ability will trigger, but it will do nothing when it resolves.

    Menace

    Rules

  • The first triggered ability triggers both when Glint-Sleeve Siphoner enters the battlefield and whenever it attacks. You don't have to choose only one.
  • Energy counters are a kind of counter that a player may have. They're not associated with any specific permanents.
  • Energy counters aren't mana. They don't go away as steps, phases, and turns end, and effects that add mana "of any type" can't give you energy counters.
  • If a spell or ability with one or more targets states that you "may pay" some amount of {E}, and each permanent that it targets has become an illegal target, the spell or ability won't resolve. You can't pay any {E} even if you want to.
  • If an effect says you get one or more {E}, you get that many energy counters. To pay one or more {E}, you lose that many energy counters. You can't pay more energy counters than you have. Any effects that interact with counters a player gets, has, or loses can interact with energy counters.
  • Keep track of how many energy counters each player has. Potential ways to track this include writing theme down on paper or using dice, but any method that is clear and mutually agreeable is fine. (At higher levels of tournament play, dice may not be allowed for tracking counters that players have.)
  • Some spells and abilities that give you {E} may require targets. If each target chosen is an illegal target as that spell or ability tries to resolve, it won't resolve. You won't get any {E}.
  • Some triggered abilities state that you "may pay" a certain amount of {E}. You can't pay that amount multiple times to multiply the effect. You simply choose whether or not to pay that amount of {E} as the ability resolves.
  • Some triggered abilities that state that you "may pay" a certain amount of {E} describe an effect that happens "If you do." In that case, no player may take actions to try to stop the ability's effect after you make your choice. If the payment is followed by the phrase "When you do," then you'll choose any targets for that reflexive triggered ability and put it on the stack before players can take actions.
  • {E} is the energy symbol. It represents one energy counter.

    Rules

  • Damage dealt to a player causes that player to lose that much life.
  • If an opponent lost life and subsequently lost the game, Rakdos's first ability is satisfied, and its last ability counts that loss of life.
  • If there are additional costs to cast a creature spell, such as a kicker cost or the commander tax, apply those increases before applying cost reductions.
  • Rakdos can be put onto the battlefield by another spell or ability even if no opponent has lost life that turn.
  • Rakdos's last ability can't reduce the colored mana requirement of a creature spell you cast.
  • Rakdos's last ability cares about the total life lost, not necessarily what an opponent's life total is compared to what it was at the beginning of the turn. For example, if an opponent loses 5 life and then gains 10 life in a turn, creature spells you cast will cost {5} less to cast.
  • Rakdos's last ability won't reduce the cost to cast Rakdos itself. It applies only to creature spells you cast once Rakdos is on the battlefield.
