    Rules

  • Any choices made when the spell resolves won’t have been made yet when it’s copied. Any such choices will be made separately when the copy resolves.
  • Being solved is not part of a permanent’s copiable values. A permanent that becomes a copy of a solved Case is not solved. A solved Case that somehow becomes a copy of a different Case stays solved.
  • Cases don’t lose their other abilities when they become solved.
  • Each Case has two special keyword abilities: to solve and solved.
  • If a permanent spell is copied, it’s put onto the battlefield as a token as the spell resolves rather than putting the copy of the spell onto the battlefield. The rules that apply to a permanent spell becoming a permanent apply to a copy of a spell becoming a token.
  • If the spell that’s copied has an X whose value was determined as it was cast, the copy has the same value of X.
  • Once a Case becomes solved, it stays solved until it leaves the battlefield.
  • The copy is created on the stack, so it’s not “cast.” Creating the copy won’t cause abilities that trigger when a player casts a spell to trigger.
  • The meaning of “solved” differs based on what type of ability follows it. “Solved — [activated ability]” means “[Activated ability]. Activate only if this Case is solved.” Activated abilities contain a colon. They’re generally written “[Cost]: [Effect].”
  • The token that a resolving copy of a permanent spell becomes isn’t “created” and won’t interact with abilities that care about tokens being created, such as that of Case of the Pilfered Proof.
  • The triggered ability Case of the Shifting Visage has when it’s solved and the copy it creates will resolve before the spell that caused the ability to trigger.
  • You can’t choose to pay any additional costs for a copied spell. However, effects based on any additional costs that were paid for the original spell are copied as though those same costs were paid for the copy too.
  • “Solved — [Triggered ability]” means “[Triggered ability]. This ability triggers only if this Case is solved.” Triggered abilities use the word “when,” “whenever,” or “at.” They’re often written as “[Trigger condition], [effect].”
  • “Solved — [static ability]” means “As long as this Case is solved, [static ability].” Static abilities are written as statements, such as “Creatures you control get +1/+1” or “Instant and sorcery spells you cast cost {1} less to cast.”
  • “To Solve — [condition]” means “At the beginning of your end step, if [condition] and this Case is not solved, it becomes solved.”
  • “To solve” abilities will check for their condition twice: once when the ability would trigger, and once when it resolves. If the condition isn’t true at the beginning of your end step, the ability won’t trigger at all. If the condition isn’t true when the ability resolves, the Case won’t become solved.

    Rules

  • Any "enters" abilities of the copied creature will trigger when Clone enters the battlefield. Any "as [this creature] enters" or "[this creature] enters with" abilities of the chosen creature will also work.
  • If the chosen creature is a token, Clone copies the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that put it onto the battlefield. Clone is not a token.
  • If the chosen creature is copying something else (for example, if the chosen creature is another Clone), then your Clone enters as whatever the chosen creature copied.
  • If the chosen creature has {X} in its mana cost (such as Protean Hydra), X is considered to be zero.
  • Clone copies exactly what was printed on the original creature and nothing more (unless that creature is copying something else or is a token; see below). It doesn't copy whether that creature is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or Auras attached to it, or any non-copy effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, or so on.
  • If Clone somehow enters at the same time as another creature, Clone can't become a copy of that creature. You may choose only a creature that's already on the battlefield.
  • You can choose not to copy anything. In that case, Clone enters as a 0/0 Shapeshifter creature, and is probably put into the graveyard immediately.
  • Clone's ability doesn't target the chosen creature.

    Rules

  • Auras attached to the exiled creature will be put into their owners' graveyards. Any Equipment will become unattached and remain on the battlefield. Any counters on the exiled permanent will cease to exist.
  • Identity Thief copies the printed values of the targeted creature, plus any copy effects that have been applied to that creature. It won't copy other effects that have changed the targeted creature's power, toughness, types, color, or so on. It also won't copy counters on the targeted creature.
  • Identity Thief will still be a copy of the creature during the next end step when the exiled card returns. If it has an ability that triggers at the beginning of the end step, that ability will trigger for Identity Thief and not for the returned creature.
  • If the targeted creature has an ability that triggers when it attacks, it'll be too late for it to trigger once Identity Thief has that ability. The same is true if another object has an ability that triggers when a creature with certain characteristics attacks and Identity Thief doesn't have those characteristics until after it becomes a copy.
  • If the targeted creature is a double-faced or melded permanent, Identity Thief copies the face shown. Because Identity Thief is not a double-faced card or meld card, it won't be able to transform or meld. If it copies a melded permanent or the back face of a double-faced card, its mana value will be 0. Exiled double-faced cards and exiled meld cards will return with their front faces up.
  • If the targeted creature is itself copying a permanent, Identity Thief will become whatever it's copying, as modified by that copy effect. For example, if you target a Hamlet Captain that has become a copy of Permeating Mass, Identity Thief will become a Permeating Mass.
  • Noncopy effects that have already applied to Identity Thief will continue to apply to it. For example, if Woodcutter's Grit gave Identity Thief +3/+3 and hexproof earlier in the turn, Identity Thief will still have those bonuses after copying a creature.
  • This effect can cause Identity Thief to become a copy of a creature that can't normally attack, such as Lupine Prototype or a creature with defender. In these cases, it remains attacking.
  • This effect can cause Identity Thief to stop being a creature. For example, if you target an animated Gideon Jura (a planeswalker with a loyalty ability that turns him into a creature), only the printed wording will be copied; the “becomes a creature” effect won't. Identity Thief will become a noncreature Gideon with no loyalty, be removed from combat, and then be put into its owner's graveyard.

Whenever this creature attacks, you may exile another target nontoken creature. If you do, this creature becomes a copy of that creature until end of turn. Return the exiled card to the battlefield under its owner's control at the beginning of the next end step.

  • If the chosen creature is a token, Phantasmal Image copies the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that created the token. Phantasmal Image is not a token in this case.
  • If the chosen creature is copying something else (for example, if the chosen creature is another Phantasmal Image), then Phantasmal Image enters the battlefield as whatever the chosen creature copied.
  • Phantasmal Image copies exactly what was printed on the original creature (unless that creature is copying something else or is a token; see below) and it gains the Illusion creature type and the triggered ability. It doesn't copy whether that creature is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or Auras attached to it, or any non-copy effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, or so on.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Rules

  • A spell cast using jump-start will always be exiled afterward, whether it resolves, it's countered, or it leaves the stack in some other way.
  • Any enters-the-battlefield abilities of the copied creature will trigger when the token enters the battlefield. Any "As [this creature] enters the battlefield" or "[This creature] enters the battlefield with" abilities of the copied creature will also work.
  • If a card with jump-start is put into your graveyard during your turn, you'll be able to cast it right away if it's legal to do so, before an opponent can take any actions.
  • If an effect allows you to pay an alternative cost rather than a spell's mana cost, you may pay that alternative cost when you jump-start a spell. You'll still discard a card as an additional cost to cast it.
  • If the copied creature has {X} in its mana cost, X is 0.
  • If the copied creature is copying something else, the token enters the battlefield as whatever that creature is copying.
  • If the copied creature is itself a token, the token created by Quasiduplicate copies the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that created it.
  • The token copies exactly what is printed on the creature and nothing else (unless that creature is copying something else or is a token; see below). It doesn't copy whether that creature is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or Auras and/or Equipment attached to it, or any non-copy effects that changed its power, toughness, types, color, and so on.
  • You must still follow any timing restrictions and permissions when casting a spell with jump-start, including those based on the card's type. For instance, you can cast a sorcery using jump-start only when you could normally cast a sorcery.

Spark Double #62 Creature — Illusion

    Info

    Types:

    Rules

  • Any enters-the-battlefield abilities of the copied permanent will trigger when Spark Double enters the battlefield. Any “as [this permanent] enters the battlefield” or “[this permanent] enters the battlefield with” abilities of the chosen permanent will also work.
  • If Spark Double somehow enters the battlefield at the same time as another permanent, it can’t become a copy of that permanent. You may choose only a creature or planeswalker that’s already on the battlefield.
  • If it copies a planeswalker, Spark Double enters with the appropriate number of loyalty counters as printed on the card plus one. If it copies a creature, Spark Double enters with a +1/+1 counter on it, plus any counters that will be put on it from abilities it copied and other abilities of other objects.
  • If the chosen permanent is a token, Spark Double copies the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that created the token. Spark Double doesn’t become a token in this case.
  • If the chosen permanent is copying something else (for example, if the chosen permanent is another Spark Double), then Spark Double enters the battlefield as whatever the chosen permanent copied.
  • If the copied permanent has {X} in its mana cost, X is considered to be 0.
  • If the copied permanent is affected by a type-changing effect, Spark Double may enter the battlefield with different permanent types than the copied permanent currently has. Use the characteristics of Spark Double as it enters the battlefield, not of the copied permanent, to determine whether it enters with an additional counter on it. Notably, if Spark Double copies a Gideon planeswalker that’s a creature because its loyalty ability caused it to become a planeswalker creature, Spark Double enters as a noncreature planeswalker and doesn’t get a +1/+1 counter. On the other hand, if Spark Double copies Gideon Blackblade during your turn, Spark Double enters as a planeswalker creature and gets both kinds of counters.
  • Spark Double copies exactly what was printed on the original permanent (unless that permanent is copying something else or is a token; see below). It doesn’t copy whether that permanent is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or any Auras and Equipment attached to it, or any non-copy effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, or so on.
  • Spark Double isn’t legendary if it copies a legendary permanent, and this exception is copiable. If something else copies Spark Double later, that copy also won’t be legendary. If you control two or more permanents with the same name but only one is legendary, the “legend rule” doesn’t apply.
