"Find me cards equivalent to: Confound"

Equivalent cards to Confound in blue (U) as an instant that counters a spell targeting a creature and draws a card are limited. The closest is:

  • Confound itself.

No other blue instant matches both effects exactly (counter spell that targets a creature and draw a card). Variants exist:

  • Misdirection (instant, counters a spell targeting a single permanent, but doesn't draw).
  • Turn Aside (instant, counters a spell targeting a permanent, no draw).
  • Swerve (instant, redirects spell—no draw).

But Confound is unique for that combination in mono-blue.

  • Confound doesn’t resolve if the targeted spell has been countered or does not still target one or more permanents that are still creatures and are still on the battlefield. Confound is different from other such spells in that it actually specifies that the spell must target a creature, not just be able to target a creature or that the spell has a certain number of targets.

  • If there is no other legal target for the spell, this does not change the target.
  • Once the spell resolves, the new target is considered to be targeted by the deflected spell. This will trigger any effects which trigger on being targeted.
  • The target of a spell that targets another spell on the stack can be changed to any other spell on the stack, even if the new target will resolve before the spell does.
  • This does not check if the current target is legal. It just checks if the spell has a single target.
  • This only targets the spell being changed, not the original or new target of the spell it is affecting.
  • You can choose to make a spell on the stack target this spell (if such a target choice would be legal had the spell been cast while this spell was on the stack). The new target for the deflected spell is not chosen until this spell resolves. This spell is still on the stack when new targets are selected for the spell.
  • You can’t make a spell which is on the stack target itself.
  • You choose the spell to target on announcement, but you pick the new target for that spell on resolution.

You may exile a blue card from your hand rather than pay this spell's mana cost. Change the target of target spell with a single target.

    Rules

  • If a spell targets multiple things, you can't target it with Swerve, even if all but one of those targets has become illegal.
  • If a spell targets the same player or object multiple times, you can't target it with Swerve.
  • If you cast Swerve on a spell that targets a spell on the stack (like Cancel does, for example), you can't change that spell's target to itself. You can, however, change that spell's target to Swerve. If you do, that spell won't resolve when it tries to resolve because Swerve will have left the stack by then.
  • Swerve targets only the spell whose target will be changed. It doesn't directly affect the original target of that spell or the new target of that spell.
  • You don't choose the new target for the spell until Swerve resolves. You must change the target if possible. However, you can't change the target to an illegal target. If there are no legal targets, the target isn't changed. It doesn't matter if the original target of that spell has somehow become illegal.
  • An Aura spell on the stack targets the object or player which it will enchant upon entering. Thus, an Aura spell is a "spell with a single target", which means you may use Swerve to change that target. Doing so will cause it to enter enchanting the new target rather than the original one.
