"Find me cards equivalent to: Ertai's Meddling"

Cards equivalent to Ertai's Meddling (blue instants that interact with spells on the stack in unusual ways):
1. Venser, Shaper Savant — Instant-speed ability to return a spell or permanent to its owner's hand.
2. Summary Dismissal — Exiles all other spells and abilities on the stack.
3. Remand — Counter target spell, return it to owner's hand, draw a card.
4. Delay — Counters a spell; if it’s countered, exile it with three time counters, and it returns to the stack with suspend.
5. Time Stop — Ends the turn; exiles all spells and abilities on the stack.

These are all blue instants that disrupt or delay a spell, similar in intent to Ertai's Meddling. Delay is the closest by mechanics.

  • If the target spell is face down, it'll be exiled face up. It can't be cast face down when casting it without paying its mana cost.
  • If the target spell was cast with flashback, Delay's effect will exile it, not the flashback effect. The card will get time counters and gain suspend (if it didn't already have suspend).
  • When the last time counter is removed from the exiled card, it's cast as a completely new spell. Modes and targets are chosen again. If the spell has any mandatory additional costs, they must be paid again. If they can't be, the spell can't be cast and stays exiled.
  • Cards exiled with suspend are exiled face up.
  • Due to a recent rules change to suspend, you are no longer required to cast the suspended card as the second triggered ability of suspend resolves. Instead, as the second triggered ability resolves, you may cast the card. Timing permissions based on the card's type are ignored. If you don't cast the card, it remains exiled with no time counters on it, and it's no longer suspended.
  • Exiling a card with suspend isn't casting that card. This action doesn't use the stack and can't be responded to.
  • If an effect refers to a "suspended card," that means a card that (1) has suspend, (2) is in exile, and (3) has one or more time counters on it.
  • If the card has {X} in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it without paying its mana cost.
  • If the first triggered ability of suspend (the one that removes time counters) is countered, no time counter is removed. The ability will trigger again at the beginning of the card's owner's next upkeep.
  • If the second triggered ability is countered, the card can't be cast. It remains exiled with no time counters on it, and it's no longer suspended.
  • If the spell requires any targets, those targets are chosen when the spell is finally cast, not when it's exiled.
  • If you cast a card "without paying its mana cost," such as with suspend, you can't choose to cast it for any alternative costs. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, you must pay those if you want to cast the card.
  • Suspend is a keyword that represents three abilities. The first is a static ability that allows you to exile the card from your hand with the specified number of time counters (the number before the dash) on it by paying its suspend cost (listed after the dash). The second is a triggered ability that removes a time counter from the suspended card at the beginning of each of your upkeeps. The third is a triggered ability that gives you the option to cast the card when the last time counter is removed.
  • The mana value of a spell cast without paying its mana cost is determined by its mana cost, even though that cost wasn't paid.
  • When the last time counter is removed, the second triggered ability of suspend (the one that lets you cast the card) triggers. It doesn't matter why the last time counter was removed or what effect removed it.
  • You can exile a card in your hand using suspend any time you could cast that card. Consider its card type, any effects that modify when you could cast it (such as flash) and any other effects that stop you from casting it (such as from Meddling Mage's ability) to determine if and when you can do this. Whether you could actually complete all steps in casting the card is irrelevant. For example, you can exile a card with suspend that has no mana cost or that requires a target even if no legal targets are available at that time.

Counter target spell. If the spell is countered this way, exile it with three time counters on it instead of putting it into its owner's graveyard. If it doesn't have suspend, it gains suspend. (At the beginning of its owner's upkeep, they remove a timecounter When the last is removed, they may play it without paying its mana cost. If it's a creature, it has haste.)

    Rules

  • A targeted spell which is delayed will still succeed even if its target has phased out and back in again.
  • Ertai's Meddling can't be cast through any way that doesn't pay its mana cost. This is because the X in the Meddling's mana cost can't be 0, but effects that allow spells to be cast without paying their mana costs set X to 0.
  • If Ertai's Meddling is used to copy a spell being cast face down due to Morph ability, the spell will create a face up, 2/2, colorless, nameless creature with no text. This may be a little counter-intuitive, because you might expect the card to enter face down like it would have when originally cast, but Ertai's Meddling copies only the original spell and not the entire card the spell represented.
  • If a copy of a spell (one that has no card representing it) is affected by Ertai's Meddling, the spell ceases to exist when exiled. It will not gain counters and will not be put back on the stack.
  • Note that a delayed spell that targets another spell won't resolve when it resolves since it will find that its target is no longer on the stack.
  • Once it is put back on the stack, it is a "new" spell again and can be countered or even targeted by another Ertai's Meddling.
  • This now exiles the spell as part of Ertai's Meddling's resolution, instead of waiting for the targeted spell to start resolving.
  • If the spell was cast using flashback, Ertai's Meddling will still exile it with delay counters on it. When the card is returned to the stack, it still "remembers" the flashback cost was originally paid. It'll be exiled when it resolves or otherwise leaves the stack.
  • Ertai's Meddling has the spell's controller put the spell back onto the stack; it does not have its controller cast the spell again. Anything that triggers off of casting spells, such as Contemplation , won't trigger. Simillarly, effects that count spells that are cast (like Rule of Law) or prevent spells from being cast (like Iona, Shield of Emeria) won't count or affect the copy that is put onto the stack since the copy wasn't cast.
  • If Ertai's Meddling is used to copy an arcane spell that had effects spliced onto it, it will create a spell with all of those effects. That spell's controller will not be able to splice additional effects onto the spell, since they did not re-cast the spell and instead simply put it back onto the stack.

X can't be 0. Target spell's controller exiles it with X delay counters on it. At the beginning of each of that player's upkeeps, if that card is exiled, remove a delaycounterfrom it. If the card has no delay counters on it, the player puts it onto the stack as a copy of the original spell.

  • Exiling a spell or ability prevents that spell or ability from resolving, but it doesn't technically "counter" anything. This means that Time Stop can exile spells and abilities that "can't be countered."
  • Unless Time Stop is cast during the Ending phase, any "at the beginning of the end step"-triggered abilities don't get the chance to trigger on the turn Time Stop is cast. These abilities will trigger at the beginning of the next end step.
  • Ending the turn this way means the following things happen in order: 1) All spells and abilities on the stack are exiled. This includes Time Stop, though it will continue to resolve. It also includes spells and abilities that can't be countered. 2) All attacking and blocking creatures are removed from combat. 3) State-based actions are checked. No player gets priority, and no triggered abilities are put onto the stack. 4) The current phase and/or step ends. The game skips straight to the cleanup step. The cleanup step happens in its entirety.
  • If any triggered abilities do trigger during this process, they're put onto the stack during the cleanup step. If this happens, players will have a chance to cast spells and activate abilities, then there will be another cleanup step before the turn finally ends.
