    Abilities/Keywords

    Deathtouch Flying Lifelink Proliferate Vigilance

    Rules

  • An ability that triggers "Whenever you proliferate" triggers even if you chose no permanents or players while doing so.
  • If a permanent ever has both +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters on it at the same time, they're removed in pairs as a state-based action so that the permanent has only one of those kinds of counters on it.
  • If a player or permanent has more than one kind of counter on it, and you choose for it to get additional counters, it must get one of each kind of counter it already has. You can't have it get just one kind of counter it already has and not the others.
  • Players can respond to a spell or ability whose effect includes proliferating. Once that spell or ability starts to resolve, however, and its controller chooses which permanents and players will get new counters, it's too late for anyone to respond.
  • To proliferate, you can choose any permanent that has a counter, including ones controlled by opponents. You can choose any player who has a counter, including opponents. You can't choose cards in any zone other than the battlefield, even if they have counters on them.
  • You don't have to choose every permanent or player that has a counter, only the ones you want to add another counter to. Since "any number" includes zero, you don't have to choose any permanents at all, and you don't have to choose any players at all.

    Vigilance

    Rules

  • Chulane's triggered ability doesn't count as playing a land. It can put a land card onto the battlefield even if you've already played your land for the turn, and even if it's not your turn.
  • Chulane's triggered ability resolves before the spell that caused it to trigger. It resolves even if that spell is countered.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Flying Trample

    Rules

  • "Shield" is not an ability that creatures have and shield counters are not keyword counters. If a creature with a shield counter loses its abilities, the shield counter will still protect it as normal.
  • A creature with a shield counter on it may still be destroyed by state-based actions if it has damage marked on it equal to its toughness or has been dealt unpreventable damage by a source with deathtouch.
  • If a permanent that would be dealt damage has more than one shield counter on it, that damage is prevented and only one shield counter is removed.
  • If a permanent with a shield counter is dealt unpreventable damage, that damage will be dealt and a shield counter will still be removed.
  • If you cast a spell with casualty this way, you can pay the costs in any order, which means that you may remove a counter from a creature then sacrifice it to pay the casualty cost. Bear in mind that removing a +1/+1 counter this way will reduce a creature's power, which might prevent you from paying the casualty cost with that creature.
  • Removing a counter from a creature is an additional cost of casting the spell and may be combined with other additional costs or alternative costs that spell may have, such as casualty.
  • Removing a shield counter in this way isn't the same as regenerating a creature.
  • Shield counters don't prevent players from sacrificing creatures.

    Rules

  • If a creature has multiple instances of prowess, each triggers separately.
  • If another effect causes Narset's power to be less than or equal to the mana value of the target card as the ability tries to resolve, the target is illegal. The card won't be exiled, and you won't get to cast a copy.
  • If the spell you cast has {X} in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X.
  • If you cast a spell "without paying its mana cost," you can't pay any alternative costs. You can, however, pay additional costs, such as kicker costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, you must pay those.
  • If you don't want to cast the copy, you can choose not to; the copy ceases to exist the next time state-based actions are performed.
  • Narset's first ability gives it prowess while it's on the battlefield.
  • Once a prowess ability triggers, causing the creature to lose prowess by removing Narset, Enlightened Exile won't affect that ability. The creature will still get +1/+1 until end of turn.
  • You cast the copy while the ability is resolving and still on the stack. You can't wait to cast it later in the turn.

  • Except in some very rare cases, the card each player draws will be the card revealed from the top of their library.
  • Selvala’s ability is not a mana ability. Players can respond to it, and it can’t be activated in the middle of paying for a cost. A recent update to rule 605.1a has made any abilities that move cards to or from libraries no longer mana abilities.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Flying Menace Vigilance

    Rules

  • Because all attackers are chosen at once, a spell cast this way can't affect which creatures you can attack with, but it can affect which creatures will be able to block.
  • If a spell has {X} in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X if you cast it without paying its mana cost.
  • If the revealed card doesn't have an odd mana value or if that card does but you choose not to cast it, you draw a card. Keep in mind that revealing a card doesn't cause it to change zones. This means that the card you draw will be the card you revealed.
  • If you cast a card "without paying its mana cost," you can't choose to cast it for any alternative costs, such as evoke costs. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, such as that of Tormenting Voice, those must be paid to cast it.
  • If you wish to cast the revealed card without paying its mana cost, you must cast it while Yennett's triggered ability is resolving; you can't cast for free it later in the turn.
