    Rules

  • Any effect that exiles a card exiles it face up unless that effect specifies otherwise.
  • If Ashiok's second ability returns a token to its owner's hand, that player can't exile that token from their hand. They must exile a card from their hand if possible.
  • If a spell has {X} in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it without paying its mana cost.
  • If you cast a spell "without paying its mana cost," you can't choose to cast it for any alternative costs. You can, however, pay additional costs, such as kicker costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, such as that of Thrill of Possibility, those must be paid to cast the card.
  • If you wish to cast any exiled cards, you do so as part of the resolution of Ashiok's last ability. You can't wait to cast them later. Timing permissions based on a card's type are ignored.
  • In a multiplayer game, if a player leaves the game, all cards that player owns leave as well. If you leave the game, any spells and/or permanents you control from Ashiok's last ability are exiled.
  • The card exiled while resolving Ashiok's second ability may be the one that was returned to its owner's hand.
  • You may cast any face-up cards your opponents own from exile while resolving Ashiok's last ability, not just those exiled by Ashiok's second ability or by Ashiok's Nightmare tokens.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Deathtouch

    Rules

  • An effect that instructs you to "cast" a card doesn't allow you to play lands.
  • Casting the card causes it to leave exile. You can't cast it multiple times.
  • Gonti doesn't change when you can cast the exiled card. For example, if you exile a creature card without flash, you can cast it only during your main phase when the stack is empty.
  • If you leave the game, the card remains exiled face down indefinitely. No player may look at it.
  • You may look at and cast that card (and spend mana as though it were mana of any type to do so) even if Gonti leaves the battlefield. If another player gains control of Gonti, that player can't look at or cast the card, and you still can.
  • You pay the costs for the exiled card if you cast it. You may pay alternative costs such as emerge rather than the card's mana cost.
  • The six types of mana are white, blue, black, red, green, and colorless. Snow mana is not a type of mana. Gonti, Lord of Luxury won't let you pay a snow cost using mana produced by a nonsnow source.

Deathtouch When Gonti enters, look at the top four cards of target opponent's library, exile one of them face down, then put the rest on the bottom of that library in a random order. You may cast that card for as long as it remains exiled, and mana of any type can be spent to cast that spell.

When Hama enters, target opponent mills three cards. Exile up to one noncreature, nonland card from that player's graveyard. For as long as you control Hama, you may cast the exiled card during your turn by waterbending rather than paying its mana cost, where X is its mana value. (While paying a waterbend cost, you can tap your artifacts and creatures to help. Each one pays for .)

    Rules

  • Auras attached to the exiled permanent will be put into their owners' graveyards. Any Equipment will become unattached and remain on the battlefield. Any counters on the exiled permanent will cease to exist.
  • Hostage Taker has received errata to prevent it from targeting itself. The correct Oracle wording appears above.
  • If Hostage Taker leaves the battlefield before its triggered ability resolves, the target permanent won't be exiled.
  • If a token is exiled this way, it will cease to exist and won't return to the battlefield. You can't cast it.
  • If it's still in exile, the exiled card returns to the battlefield immediately after Hostage Taker leaves the battlefield. Nothing happens between the two events, including state-based actions.
  • In a multiplayer game, if Hostage Taker's owner leaves the game while the card is still exiled and another player owns that card, the exiled card will return to the battlefield under its owner's control. Because the one-shot effect that returns the card isn't an ability that goes on the stack, it won't cease to exist along with the leaving player's spells and abilities on the stack.
  • In a multiplayer game, if a player leaves the game, all cards that player owns leave as well. If you leave the game, any spell or permanent cards you control from Hostage Taker's ability are exiled.
  • Once you begin to cast the exiled card, it's considered a new object. You'll control that spell and the permanent that spell becomes even if Hostage Taker leaves the battlefield.

Flying Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, look at the top three cards of that player's library, exile one of them face down, then put the rest into their graveyard. You may cast that card for as long as it remains exiled, and mana of any type can be spent to cast that spell.
