"Find me cards equivalent to: Heart-Piercer Manticore"

Here are equivalent red cards to Heart-Piercer Manticore that have similar sacrifice-for-damage effects:
1. Barrage of Expendables

  • Red, allows you to sacrifice creatures to deal damage.
    2. Flamewake Phoenix
  • Red, not a direct sacrifice-for-damage, but has graveyard recursion.
    3. Keldon Marauders
  • Red, deals damage when entering and leaving, but does not require sacrificing another creature.

The closest equivalent among red creatures for the sacrifice-for-damage effect is Greater Gargadon (sacrifice for future payoff, not for immediate damage) or Volley Veteran (deals damage based on another creature, but goblin-tribal). No exact red creature matches all attributes of Heart-Piercer Manticore, especially the Embalm ability.

Reason: Few red creatures combine sacrifice-for-damage and a graveyard recursion like Heart-Piercer Manticore.

  • Barrage of Expendables deals the damage, not the sacrificed creature. Notably, that creature having deathtouch or lifelink provides no additional benefit.
  • Because targets are chosen before costs are paid, it is possible to choose a creature as the target of the ability and then sacrifice that creature. The ability won't resolve when it tries to resolve and no damage will be dealt.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Flying Haste

    Rules

  • Flamewake Phoenix's last ability will check at the start of your beginning of combat step to see if you control a creature with power 4 or greater. If you don't, the ability won't trigger at all. If it does trigger, the ability will check again as it tries to resolve. If you don't control a creature with power 4 or greater at that time, the ability won't resolve. You won't get a chance to pay {R}, and Flamewake Phoenix won't return to the battlefield.
  • If Flamewake Phoenix can't attack for any reason (such as being tapped), then it doesn't attack. If there's a cost associated with having it attack, you're not forced to pay that cost, so it doesn't have to attack in that case either.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Suspend

    Rules

  • A creature cast using suspend will enter the battlefield with haste. It will have haste until another player gains control of it. (In some rare cases, another player may gain control of the creature spell itself. If this happens, the creature won't enter the battlefield with haste.)
  • Cards exiled with suspend are exiled face up.
  • Due to a recent rules change to suspend, you are no longer required to cast the suspended card as the second triggered ability of suspend resolves. Instead, as the second triggered ability resolves, you may cast the card. Timing permissions based on the card's type are ignored. If you don't cast the card, it remains exiled with no time counters on it, and it's no longer suspended.
  • Exiling a card with suspend isn't casting that card. This action doesn't use the stack and can't be responded to.
  • If an effect refers to a "suspended card," that means a card that (1) has suspend, (2) is in exile, and (3) has one or more time counters on it.
  • If the card has {X} in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it without paying its mana cost.
  • If the first triggered ability of suspend (the one that removes time counters) is countered, no time counter is removed. The ability will trigger again at the beginning of the card's owner's next upkeep.
  • If the second triggered ability is countered, the card can't be cast. It remains exiled with no time counters on it, and it's no longer suspended.
  • If the spell requires any targets, those targets are chosen when the spell is finally cast, not when it's exiled.
  • If you cast a card "without paying its mana cost," such as with suspend, you can't choose to cast it for any alternative costs. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, you must pay those if you want to cast the card.
  • Suspend is a keyword that represents three abilities. The first is a static ability that allows you to exile the card from your hand with the specified number of time counters (the number before the dash) on it by paying its suspend cost (listed after the dash). The second is a triggered ability that removes a time counter from the suspended card at the beginning of each of your upkeeps. The third is a triggered ability that gives you the option to cast the card when the last time counter is removed.
  • The mana value of a spell cast without paying its mana cost is determined by its mana cost, even though that cost wasn't paid.
  • When the last time counter is removed, the second triggered ability of suspend (the one that lets you cast the card) triggers. It doesn't matter why the last time counter was removed or what effect removed it.
  • You can exile a card in your hand using suspend any time you could cast that card. Consider its card type, any effects that modify when you could cast it (such as flash) and any other effects that stop you from casting it (such as from Meddling Mage's ability) to determine if and when you can do this. Whether you could actually complete all steps in casting the card is irrelevant. For example, you can exile a card with suspend that has no mana cost or that requires a target even if no legal targets are available at that time.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Embalm

    Rules

  • For each card with embalm, a corresponding game play supplement token can be found in some Amonkhet booster packs. These supplements are not required to play with cards with embalm; you can use the same items to represent an embalmed token as you would any other token.
  • Heart-Piercer Manticore features a new style of triggered ability. When it enters the battlefield, its triggered ability goes on the stack without a target. While that ability is resolving, you may sacrifice a creature. If you do, a second ability triggers and you pick a target that will be dealt damage. This is different from other abilities that say "If you do . . ." in that players may cast spells and activate abilities before a creature is sacrificed and then again after the creature is sacrificed but before damage is dealt.
  • Heart-Piercer Manticore's damage-dealing ability triggers only when you sacrifice a creature as a result of the instruction of its triggered ability. It won't trigger if you sacrifice a creature for any other reason.
  • If the card copied by the token had any "when [this permanent] enters the battlefield" abilities, then the token also has those abilities and will trigger them when it's created. Similarly, any "as [this permanent] enters the battlefield" or "[this permanent] enters the battlefield with" abilities that the token has copied will also work.
  • The sacrificed creature's last known existence on the battlefield is checked to determine its power.
  • The token copies exactly what was printed on the original card and nothing else. It doesn't copy any information about the object the card was before it was put into your graveyard.
  • The token is a Zombie in addition to its other types and is white instead of its other colors. It has no mana cost, and thus its mana value is 0. These are copiable values of the token that other effects may copy.
  • You can't sacrifice multiple creatures to deal damage multiple times.
  • If a spell or ability puts a creature card with embalm into your graveyard during your main phase, you'll have priority immediately after that spell or ability resolves. You can activate the creature card's embalm ability before any player can exile it with an effect, such as that of Crook of Condemnation, if it's legal for you to do so.
  • Once you've activated an embalm ability, the card is immediately exiled. Opponents can't try to stop the ability by exiling the card with an effect such as that of Crook of Condemnation.
