3. Whir of Invention — Has improvise and offers modal flexibility, though different effect.

    Spree

    Rules

  • Each additional cost and associated mode in the text box is also preceded with a + indicator. These symbols also have no rules meaning and serve only to remind players that the listed costs are additional costs.
  • If a mode requires a target, you can select that mode only if there’s a legal target available. Ignore the targeting requirements for modes you don’t choose.
  • If a spell with spree is copied, the effect that creates the copy may allow you to choose new targets. You cannot choose new modes.
  • If all targets for the chosen modes become illegal before a spell with spree resolves, the spell won’t resolve and none of its effects will happen. If at least one target is still legal, the spell will resolve but will have no effect on any illegal targets.
  • If an effect allows you to cast a spell with spree “without paying its mana cost,” you must still choose at least one mode and pay the associated additional costs.
  • No matter which modes you choose, you always follow the instructions in the order they are written.
  • No player can cast spells or activate abilities in between the modes of a resolving spell. Any abilities that trigger won’t be put onto the stack until the spell is done resolving.
  • Spells with spree have a + (plus sign) indicator in the upper right corner of the card frame. This has no rules meaning and serves only to remind players that at least one additional cost is required to cast the spell.
  • The effect of Metamorphic Blast’s first mode causes the target creature to lose its other colors and creature types. It doesn’t lose any of its abilities.
  • The effect of Metamorphic Blast’s first mode will overwrite any previous effects that set the creature’s power and toughness to specific values. Effects that otherwise modify the target creature’s power and toughness will still apply no matter when they took effect. The same is true for +1/+1 counters.
  • The mana value of a spell with spree is determined only by its mana cost (in the upper right corner of the card). It doesn’t matter which modes you choose or which additional costs you pay, including any additional costs imposed by other effects.
  • You can’t choose the same mode more than once.
  • You choose the modes as you cast the spell with spree. Once modes are chosen, they can’t be changed.
  • You must choose at least one of the listed modes and pay its associated additional cost in order to cast a spell with spree.

    Rules

  • Creatures that enter the battlefield or come under the target player’s control after Polymorphist’s Jest resolves won’t be affected.
  • Effects that modify a creature’s power and/or toughness, such as the effect of Titanic Growth, will apply to the creatures no matter when they started to take effect. The same is true for any counters that change their power and/or toughness and effects that switch power and toughness.
  • If one of the Theros block Gods is affected by Polymorphist’s Jest, it will be a legendary 1/1 blue Frog enchantment creature with no abilities. If it stops being a creature, perhaps because your devotion to its color(s) decreased, it will be a legendary blue enchantment with no abilities. The way continuous effects work, the God’s type-changing ability is applied before the effect that removes that ability is applied.
  • If one of the affected creatures gains an ability after Polymorphist’s Jest resolves, it will keep that ability.
  • Polymorphist’s Jest doesn’t counter abilities that have already triggered or been activated. In particular, there is no way to cast this spell to stop a creature’s ability that says “At the beginning of your upkeep,” “When this creature enters the battlefield,” or similar from triggering.
  • Polymorphist’s Jest overwrites all previous effects that set the creatures’ base power and toughness to specific values. Any power- or toughness-setting effects that start to apply after Polymorphist’s Jest resolves will overwrite this effect.
  • The creatures will lose all other colors and creature types, but they will retain any other card types (such as artifact) or supertypes (such as legendary) they may have.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Rules

  • A mana ability is an ability that produces mana, not an ability that costs mana.
  • If a permanent spell is exchanged this way, its new controller will control the permanent it becomes.
  • If the exchange doesn't happen but the spell is still a legal target, its controller may choose new targets for it.
  • If the target spell or the target creature is an illegal target as Sudden Substitution resolves, the exchange won't happen. If both targets are legal but are both controlled by the same player, the exchange won't happen.
  • In a multiplayer game, if the controller of one of the objects leaves the game after Sudden Substitution resolves, the effect that gave them control of the spell or permanent expires. If the spell is still on the stack, the player who gains control of it this way can't choose new targets for it.
  • The exchange lasts indefinitely. It doesn't expire for the spell if the creature changes zones or leaves the game, or vice versa.
  • The noncreature spell is still on the stack after exchanging control, and the creature is still on the battlefield.
  • After a spell with split second resolves (or otherwise leaves the stack), players may again cast spells and activate abilities before the next object on the stack resolves.
  • Casting a spell with split second won't affect spells and abilities that are already on the stack.
  • If the resolution of a triggered ability involves casting a spell, that spell can't be cast if a spell with split second is on the stack.
  • Players may turn face-down creatures face up while a spell with split second is on the stack.
  • Players still get priority while a card with split second is on the stack; their options are just limited to mana abilities and certain special actions.
  • Split second doesn't stop triggered abilities from triggering, such as that of Chalice of the Void. If one does, its controller puts it on the stack and chooses targets for it, if any. Those abilities will resolve as normal.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Improvise

    Rules

  • Because improvise isn't an alternative cost, it can be used in conjunction with alternative costs.
  • Equipment attached to a creature doesn't become tapped when that creature becomes tapped, and tapping that Equipment doesn't cause the creature to become tapped.
  • If an artifact you control has a mana ability with {T} in the cost, activating that ability while casting a spell with improvise will result in the artifact being tapped when you pay the spell's costs. You won't be able to tap it again for improvise. Similarly, if you sacrifice an artifact to activate a mana ability while casting a spell with improvise, that artifact won't be on the battlefield when you pay the spell's costs, so you won't be able to tap it for improvise.
  • Improvise can't be used to pay for anything other than the cost of casting the spell. For example, it can't be used during the resolution of an ability that says "Counter target spell unless its controller pays {3}."
  • Improvise can't pay for {W}, {U}, {B}, {R}, {G}, or {C} mana symbols in a spell's total cost.
  • Improvise doesn't change a spell's mana cost or mana value.
  • Tapping an artifact won't cause its abilities to stop applying unless those abilities say so.
  • When calculating a spell's total cost, include any alternative costs, additional costs, or anything else that increases or reduces the cost to cast the spell. Improvise applies after the total cost is calculated.
  • When using improvise to cast a spell with {X} in its mana cost, first choose the value for X. That choice, plus any cost increases or decreases, will determine the spell's total cost. Then you can tap artifacts you control to help pay that cost. For example, if you cast Whir of Invention (a spell with improvise and mana cost {X}{U}{U}{U}) and choose X to be 3, the total cost is {3}{U}{U}{U}. If you tap two artifacts, you'll have to pay {1}{U}{U}{U}.
