    Level Up

    Rules

  • A creature’s level is based on how many level counters it has on it, not how many times its level up ability has been activated or has resolved. If a leveler gets level counters due to some other effect (such as Clockspinning) or loses level counters for some reason (such as Vampire Hexmage), its level is changed accordingly.
  • Effects that modify a leveler’s power or toughness, such as the effects of Giant Growth or Glorious Anthem, will apply to it no matter when they started to take effect. The same is true for counters that change the creature’s power or toughness (such as +1/+1 counters) and effects that switch its power and toughness.
  • Effects that set a leveler’s power or toughness to a specific value, including the effects from a level symbol’s ability, apply in timestamp order. The timestamp of each level symbol’s ability is the same as the timestamp of the leveler itself, regardless of when the most recent level counter was put on it.
  • If another creature becomes a copy of a leveler, all of the leveler’s printed abilities — including those represented by level symbols — are copied. The current characteristics of the leveler, and the number of level counters on it, are not. The abilities, power, and toughness of the copy will be determined based on how many level counters are on the copy.
  • The abilities a leveler grants to itself don’t overwrite any other abilities it may have. In particular, they don’t overwrite the creature’s level up ability; it always has that.

    Rules

  • Can never affect the colored part of the cost.
  • If this card is sacrificed to pay part of a spell's cost, the cost reduction still applies.
  • The effect is cumulative.
  • The generic X cost is still considered generic even if there is a requirement that a specific color be used for it. For example, “only black mana can be spent this way”. This distinction is important for effects which reduce the generic portion of a spell's cost.
  • The lower cost is not optional like with some other cost reducers.
  • This can lower the cost to zero, but not below zero.
  • A spell you cast that’s blue and red costs {1} less, not {2} less.
  • Activating the ability creates a replacement effect that acts like a shield, replacing the next time Nightscape Familiar would be destroyed that turn. This shield works against effects that try to destroy Nightscape Familiar or lethal damage that would be dealt to Nightscape Familiar.
  • Nightscape Familiar can regenerate even if it isn’t in combat, it’s already tapped, or it’s undamaged.
  • You can activate the regeneration ability even if Nightscape Familiar isn’t at risk of being destroyed.

  • A permanent card is an artifact, battle, creature, enchantment, land, or planeswalker card. Tokens are not cards, and while tokens are put into the graveyard before ceasing to exist, that action doesn't count as a player having descended.
  • Abilities that begin with "At the beginning of your end step, if you descended this turn" will trigger only once during your end step, no matter how many times you descended this turn. However, if you haven't descended this turn as your end step begins, the ability won't trigger at all. It's not possible to put a permanent card into your graveyard during the end step in time to have the ability trigger.
  • In either case, it doesn't matter if those cards are still in that player's graveyard.
  • Multiple cards have abilities that begin with "At the beginning of your end step, if you descended this turn." These cards don't need to have been under your control at the time you descended. For example, if a permanent card is put into your graveyard during your first main phase and you cast Stalactite Stalker your second main phase, its ability will trigger at the beginning of your end step.
  • Some cards refer to a player who has "descended this turn." This means that a permanent card has been put into that player's graveyard from anywhere this turn.
  • Some cards refer to the number of times a player descended this turn. Those cards care about the number of permanent cards put into that player's graveyard from anywhere this turn.
  • Stalactites are the ones that hang from the ceilings of caves. You might be thinking of stalagmites.
  • Use Stalactite Stalker's power as it last existed on the battlefield to determine the value of X.
