    Rules

  • Banefire can be targeted by spells that try to counter it regardless of what the value of X is. If X is 5 or more, those spells will still resolve, but the part of their effect that would counter Banefire won’t do anything. Any other effects those spells have will work as normal.
  • If its target is illegal by the time Banefire tries to resolve, the spell isn’t countered, but it doesn’t resolve. The target won’t be dealt damage.
  • To determine whether it can be countered and its damage can be prevented, Banefire checks the number you chose for X, not the amount of mana you actually spent or the amount of damage it will actually deal.

At the beginning of each player's upkeep, this enchantment deals 1 damage to them. Whenever a player casts a spell, if no mana was spent to cast that spell, this enchantment deals 5 damage to that player. : Your opponents can't gain life this turn.

  • Effects that would replace gaining life with another effect won't apply because it's impossible for players to gain life.
  • If an effect says to set a player's life total to a certain number and that number is higher than the player's current life total, that part of the effect won't do anything. (If the number is lower than the player's current life total, the effect will work as normal.)
  • Skullcrack targets only the player or planeswalker. If that player or planeswalker is an illegal target when Skullcrack tries to resolve, it won't resolve and none of its effects will happen.
  • Spells and abilities that would cause a player to gain life or that would prevent damage still resolve, but the life-gain and damage-prevention parts have no effect.

    Abilities/Keywords

    Kicker

    Rules

  • A spell or ability that counters spells can still target Urza's Rage. When that spell or ability resolves, Urza's Rage won't be countered, but any additional effects of that spell or ability will still happen.
  • If the target for Urza's Rage becomes an illegal target, the spell won't resolve and will be put into its owner's graveyard with no effect. This is true even if its damage can't be prevented and even though it can't be countered.
  • If a card or token enters as a copy of a permanent, the new permanent isn't kicked, even if the original was.
  • If a spell's kicker cost was paid, the spell is "kicked."
  • If you copy a kicked spell on the stack, the copy is also kicked. If the copied spell is a permanent spell, the token the copy of that spell becomes when it enters is also kicked.
  • If you put a permanent with a kicker ability onto the battlefield without casting it, you can't kick it.
  • The kicker ability doesn't let you pay a kicker cost more than once.
  • To determine a spell's total cost, start with the mana cost (or an alternative cost if another card's effect allows you to pay one instead), add any cost increases (such as kicker), then apply any cost reductions. The spell's mana value remains unchanged, no matter what the total cost to cast it was.
