Madness works independently of why you're discarding the card. You could discard it to pay a cost, because a spell or ability tells you to, or because you have too many cards in your hand during your cleanup step. You can't discard a card with madness just because you want to, though.

To determine the total cost of a spell, start with the mana cost or alternative cost (such as a madness cost) you're paying, add any cost increases, then apply any cost reductions. The mana value of the spell is determined by only its mana cost, no matter what the total cost to cast that spell was.

If a Confluence is copied, the effect that creates the copy will usually allow you to choose new targets, but you can't choose new modes.

If a mode requires a target, you can select that mode only if there's a legal target available. Ignore the targeting requirements for modes you don't choose. Each time you select that mode, you can choose a different target, or you can choose the same target.

If all targets for the chosen modes become illegal before the Confluence resolves, the spell won't resolve and none of its effects will happen. If at least one target is still legal, the spell will resolve but will have no effect on any illegal targets.

If the first or second modes are chosen multiple times, each of those modes represents a separate damage-dealing event. Any time you are instructed to draw more than one card, you draw them one at a time. For example, if you control Phial of Galadriel and have no cards in hand and you're instructed to "draw two cards," your first card draw is replaced by drawing two cards, then you'll draw the second card from the original instruction. In total, you'll draw three cards.

If an effect would set your life total to a specific number that's higher than your current life total, that effect causes you to gain life equal to the difference. If your life total is 5 or less, Phial of Galadriel will then double the amount of life that effect would cause you to gain. For example, if you have 3 life and an effect says that your life total "becomes 10," you would gain 7 life which Phial doubles to 14, so your life total will actually become 17.

If two or more replacement effects would apply to a card-drawing event, the player drawing the card chooses the order in which to apply them.

If you somehow control more than one Phial of Galadriel, each one will effectively add one card. For example, if you control two Phials of Galadriel and would draw a card while you have no cards in hand, the effect of one Phial of Galadriel will replace the event "draw a card" with "draw two cards." The effect of the other Phial of Galadriel will replace the drawing of the first of those two cards with "draw two cards." In total, you would draw three cards.

In a Two-Headed Giant game, life gained by your teammate won't cause Phial of Galadriel's second ability to apply, even though it will cause your team's life total to increase.

The second abilities of multiple Phials of Galadriel are cumulative. If you control two, life gained while you have 5 or less life will be multiplied by 4. Three Phials will multiply that life gain by 8. And so on.

"Flashback [cost]" means "You may cast this card from your graveyard by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost" and "If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would leave the stack."

A spell cast using flashback will always be exiled afterward, whether it resolves, is countered, or leaves the stack in some other way.

If a card with flashback is put into your graveyard during your turn, you can cast it if it's legal to do so before any other player can take any actions.

To determine the total cost of a spell, start with the mana cost or alternative cost (such as a flashback cost) you're paying, add any cost increases, then apply any cost reductions. The mana value of the spell is determined only by its mana cost, no matter what the total cost to cast the spell was.

You can cast a spell using flashback even if it was somehow put into your graveyard without having been cast.

You must still follow any timing restrictions and permissions, including those based on the card's type. For instance, you can cast a sorcery using flashback only when you could normally cast a sorcery.
