"Find me cards equivalent to: Grinning Ignus"

Equivalent cards to Grinning Ignus (red Elementals that bounce for mana) are very rare. The close equivalents by mechanics are:

  • Birgi, God of Storytelling (gives mana when you cast spells, red)
  • Runaway Steam-Kin (adds mana ramp in red)
  • Wily Goblin (makes a Treasure upon ETB, red)

However, none are identical in function or Elemental subtype. Grinning Ignus is unique. Closest are red creatures that generate mana or bounce themselves for profit, but none match all attributes.

  • Although Grinning Ignus's ability has a timing restriction, it's still a mana ability. It doesn't use the stack and it can't be responded to.
  • If you cast Grinning Ignus during your main phase, it will enter the battlefield and you'll receive priority. If no abilities trigger because of this, you can activate its ability immediately, before any other player has a chance to remove it from the battlefield.

  • If Runaway Steam-Kin has three or more +1/+1 counters on it after you’re done paying for a red spell, its ability doesn’t trigger at all. If it has three or more +1/+1 counters on it as its triggered ability resolves, it doesn’t get a +1/+1 counter.
  • Runaway Steam-Kin has to be on the battlefield for its ability to trigger. Casting it won’t trigger its own ability.
  • Runaway Steam-Kin’s triggered ability resolves before the spell that caused it to trigger. It resolves even if that spell is countered.
